The Devastating Impact of Dynamite Fishing on Marine Biodiversity and Ecosystems

When the Water Goes Quiet

I have never heard a dynamite blast underwater. I have seen what one leaves behind.

That sentence is enough to begin with, because blast fishing is often discussed as a quick way to catch fish. The real story is about what the explosion removes: habitat, juvenile fish, non-target species, future catches and the confidence of a coastal community that depends on a living reef.

Dynamite fishing, also called blast fishing or fish bombing, uses explosives to stun or kill fish. The pressure wave does not distinguish between the large fish a fisher hopes to collect and the smaller animals, eggs, larvae and reef organisms nearby. The Food and Agriculture Organization describes explosives as a highly destructive fishing practice because they often kill more fish than can be caught and can ruin valuable fish habitats such as coral reefs.

How Blast Fishing Damages Reefs

An underwater explosion spreads force through the water and the seafloor. Fish close to the blast can be killed or injured, while the reef structure itself can be fractured and reduced to loose rubble. The result is not simply a smaller catch. It is the removal of the three-dimensional habitat that shelters young fish, supports invertebrates and helps maintain the relationships that make a reef productive.

Smithsonian Ocean describes blast fishing as unsustainable because it disrupts the entire food web. A fisher may collect valuable grouper or other target species, but the blast also leaves unwanted fish and other reef animals dead. The practice is indiscriminate by design.

Coral reefs are living structures, not scenery. They grow slowly, and recovery depends on water quality, surviving colonies, larval supply, grazing fish and the absence of repeated disturbance. A damaged reef can therefore remain less complex and less productive long after the sound of the explosion has disappeared. It is not responsible to attach one universal recovery time to every reef, but the direction of the damage is clear: a few seconds of destruction can create ecological effects that last for years or decades.

The Biodiversity Cost

Blast fishing reduces biodiversity in several ways at once. It kills organisms directly. It removes nursery habitat. It alters the food web. It can make the remaining reef more vulnerable to erosion, storms, pollution and warming.

The damage also spreads into the future. Juvenile fish that never reach adulthood cannot replenish a local population. Species that depend on crevices and coral branches lose shelter. Fishers who use selective gear lose access to the same productive habitat as the people using explosives.

A 2021 global review of blast fishing found that the practice remains an important conservation problem and identified major gaps in understanding its causes, distribution and management. That matters because enforcement cannot be designed well if the practice is invisible in official data.

Why Coastal Communities Pay the Price

The short-term catch can make blast fishing look profitable. The long-term calculation is different. When reefs decline, sustainable fishers face lower catches, tourism operators lose an attraction, and communities lose a natural source of food, income and coastal protection.

It is also too simple to describe every fisher who uses explosives as an environmental villain. In places where people have few alternatives, weak enforcement and immediate food or income pressures can keep destructive practices alive. Understanding those pressures does not excuse the damage. It explains why patrols and penalties need to be paired with safer gear, secure livelihoods, local participation and access to markets.

What Can Stop Dynamite Fishing?

The FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries calls on states to prohibit fishing practices involving explosives and other similarly destructive methods. Rules need monitoring, evidence and consequences, especially in areas where blasts can happen out of sight.

Effective prevention combines several tools:

  •  regular and intelligence-led patrols
  • community reporting and co-management
  • protection for reefs and nursery areas
  • legal fishing gear and training
  • alternative income linked to sustainable fisheries or tourism
  • transparent data on catches, reef condition and enforcement.

Conclusion

The devastating impact of dynamite fishing is measured not only in dead fish. It is measured in broken habitat, missing generations, reduced food security and communities forced to compete over a shrinking resource base.

Blast fishing offers speed without sustainability. It converts a living reef into a short-term harvest and sends the real cost downstream to everyone who needs that reef to remain productive. Stopping it requires laws that are enforced, monitoring that reaches the water, and conservation programs that make responsible fishing economically possible.

A reef can recover only if the damage stops. The question is whether coastal policy will move fast enough to give that recovery a chance.
