The Shark Beneath the Fear
The first time I dived with grey reef sharks in open water, my instructor told me to stay calm, hold my position and breathe slowly. What he did not tell me was how little interest the sharks would show in me. They moved through the blue with the focus of animals following their own lives. I was the anxious one.
That experience is difficult to reconcile with the image many people inherit from films and headlines. NOAA notes that most sharks are not dangerous to humans, and that people are not part of their normal diet. More than 300 shark species exist, yet only a small number have been involved in attacks on people. Sharks are not harmless in every circumstance, but fear is a poor basis for deciding what the ocean needs.
The greater and more consistent threat runs in the other direction. Sharks are caught for meat, skin, organs and fins, both intentionally and as bycatch. Their decline is not only a conservation story. It is a warning about what happens when an ocean removes its older, slower-growing predators faster than they can reproduce.
What Shark Finning Does
Shark finning is the removal of a shark’s fins, often at sea, followed by the discarding of the remaining carcass. The practice wastes most of the animal and turns a living predator into a high-value part detached from the body that produced it.
The fins are used in shark fin soup and other products. Their value is largely cultural and commercial rather than nutritional. The result is a market that can reward the capture of vulnerable species even when the wider fishery is poorly monitored.
This is why shark finning cannot be treated as a single act of cruelty separate from fisheries management. It is connected to bycatch, illegal and unreported fishing, weak traceability and the difficulty of managing animals that cross national boundaries.
Why Sharks Matter
Sharks occupy many different positions in marine food webs. Some are apex predators; others are mid-level predators, scavengers or specialised reef species. Together, they help shape relationships among prey, competitors and habitats. Removing them in large numbers can change those relationships in ways that are not visible from a single boat or market.
The loss is also uneven. Some populations are more resilient than others, while long-lived species that mature late and produce few young can take decades to recover. NOAA describes the oceanic whitetip shark as long-lived, late-maturing and vulnerable to fishing pressure. Its populations have declined by approximately 80 to 95 percent across the Pacific since the mid-1990s, while an 88 percent decline has been estimated in the Gulf of Mexico. Those figures apply to a particular species and regions; they should not be casually presented as the status of every shark.
That distinction matters. Accurate shark conservation is specific. It identifies the species, the population and the fishery rather than turning every statistic into a global slogan.
What Effective Protection Looks Like
Law is one part of the answer. In the United States, the Shark Finning Prohibition Act prohibits finning and requires the carcass to accompany the fins. The Shark Conservation Act strengthened the naturally attached fin requirement, and later federal law prohibited the possession, transport and sale of shark fins with limited exceptions.
Other jurisdictions use different rules, and enforcement remains uneven. A strong policy is only useful when authorities can identify the species, trace the catch, monitor vessels and apply penalties. International cooperation is essential because a shark caught in one region may be processed, traded and consumed somewhere else
Protection also means reducing accidental capture, improving release practices, setting science-based catch limits and protecting important habitats. Consumers can help by refusing shark products and asking restaurants, retailers and tour operators how they source seafood. These decisions do not replace regulation, but they can reduce the demand that makes destructive fishing profitable.
Conservation Without the Myth
Shark conservation does not require pretending that every shark fishery is identical or that every interaction with a shark is safe. It requires replacing a cartoon monster with an animal that can be studied, managed and respected.
The ocean does not need sharks because they are symbols. It needs them because predators are part of functioning ecosystems. A healthy marine food web is built from relationships, and removing one of its oldest participants can alter far more than the species named on a landing form.

The struggle of the ocean’s guardians is not only about saving an animal people fear. It is about learning to manage an ocean whose value cannot be measured by the most profitable part of a catch.
Shark finning is a visible expression of a wider problem: short-term extraction supported by incomplete information and weak enforcement. The practical response is equally clear—protect vulnerable populations, reduce bycatch, require traceable landings, enforce finning bans and give communities reasons to value living sharks.
When a diver meets a shark in open water, the encounter can feel extraordinary. For the shark, it is simply another moment in an ancient life. Can conservation give that life enough room to continue?
